Jud Süß is a historical novel by Lion Feuchtwanger based on the life of Joseph Süß Oppenheimer. His novel Erfolg (Success) provided a thinly veiled criticism of the Beer Hall Putsch and Hitler's rise to leadership in the Nazi Party. Feuchtwanger's Jewishness, the Jewish themes of his early fiction, and his close association with Bertolt Brecht were among the causes for his persecution. Toward his life's end in California, Feuchtwanger took up the theme of Jewishness again in his novel "Raquel, the Jewess of Toledo" (all available from MaKoMsee MaKoM Publications titles).
